[identity profile] nijininare.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] arashi_bangumi
Hello! This will be my first post. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] coolohoh, I learned about this community and with a little encouragement, I thought to share one of the reviews I made a while back. I've been posting snippets of Arashi ni Shiyagare. Since the renewal Ohno-san's corner has been my favorite and up til now (even with MatsuJun's birthday episode) it still is.

Taken from my journal (posted last July 30, 2015)

I'll just be reviewing Ohno-san's corner for today since I noticed I've put focus on Sakurai Sho's corner a little too much...

Today's guest is Haruma Miura!

They don't do much talk as they do with female guests and it starts with the header for Ohno's segment. He says today's segment was made for someone:

Sakurai-san then says: "If it's for Haruma-kun's sake then that's good."

Looks like Haruma-kun is interested.

Riida quickly replies with "Well, it's for someone's sake."

I think at this point Haruma-kun realizes it's not for his sake that leader made whatever he made for this corner.

At this point, MatsuJun seems to press on Riida more by saying: "If Haruma-kun receives it then he'll be happy..."

Seems like Riida's losing his words here because he ends up saying: "Haruma-kun...? Nnn...Haruma-kun???" Which makes the audience laugh.

Then says "君が春馬だったのか” which roughly translates to: "You're Haruma?"

The look on Haruma Miura's face says it all. He's sure of two things: Riida didn't make it for him and it seems he doesn't remember his name either. He politely (in keigo) says: "Yes, I'm called Haruma."

Location: Ueda Market, Nagano Prefecture
Item for Today's Corner: Bronze mug

Today's item is to make a mug cup from bronze--something that was common back then in teahouses and coffee lounges for being able to keep drinks cold for quiet a good amount of time. It has 450 times the temperature conductivity to glass--perfect for the summer weather. Although you don't find it often in Japan now, it apparently is a popular gift item too.

The staff (at the time of the shooting) asks if there's someone in ARASHI with a birthday and Ohno-san replies that there is. When asked who, he says "Ninomiya-kun"

Of course, ARASHI NI SHIYAGARE's editing team never lets their regulars off without some snarky remarks and this time Nino is the victim.

Text on the right translates as: For a cold person like Ninomiya-kun, this is an ideal/most suitable.

Although apparently according to Riida, he has lots of money so he can afford or obtain anything.

He even argues that even with just a message via email Ninomiya-san would be happy. (In the studio Ninomiya-san affirms this statement.)

Even with his hesitations he still goes to make it!

So he meets with the shokunin-san which is a way to refer to Japanese traditional craftsmen. He immediately asks for the process and the shokunin-san says: "You bake it, you hammer it. You bake it, you hammer it." This process is repeated until you get the shape of the product you want.

Ohno stammers and looks worried. He asks if it will be hot. (Looks like he's traumatized from previous episodes such as the knife and the ramune.)

No worries though, it was explained to him that he will cool the bronze. And it will be soft enough to hammer--safely. He looks very relieved.

What's his material? One square (apparently, pliable) sheet of bronze. Bronze becomes harder after it's continually hammered down according to the shokunin-san.

STEP 1
Draw a circle big enough to maximize the bronze.

He was able to do it expertly with one stroke.
He looks happy that he's done it.

He kept on repeating "I'm good, right?" to the point that when he said "It's been over 20 years since I've last done that but I've gone better haven't I?" to which Ninomiya-san in the studio says: "We get it. That's enough, jeeez." Hahaha!

STEP 2
Cut off the excess.

While doing this, the wife of the shokunin-san appears and tells him: "Umai na!" Which means "You're good!"

Of course, Arashi ni Shiyagare's staff won't let it pass just like that. So they caption: "She came clearly *dressed to impress: made-up and accessorized.

STEP 3

You start hammering the corners going around from the outermost part of the circle inward. It's such a long process that even Ohno commenting "This is endless..." (これは果てしないですね)

STEP 4
You then bring the whole disk to the burner and torch it.

STEP 5
After burning the disk, he dips them in sulfuric acid (don't know what the differences in colors are for) so that the thickness of the bronze changes.

Around this time the shokunin-san asks Ohno-san if he will be making something for himself. He explains that it's for his member Ninomiya-kun and then asks if it will be possible to have 2-3 more pieces. Before the shokunin-san was able to reply, the wife's voice out of the frame interrupts their conversation and she says: She'll make a spoon for him!

STEP 6

He had to scrub the charred edges and it showed a stronger looking layer underneath.

Repeat STEPS 3-6 for an HOUR
Ohno-san is truly an artist. Enjoying the tedious work of hammering the bronze outward from the center. The reason behind this is that the bronze only stretches/molds 1cm per round of hammering. So it definitely takes time to mold this to what it will be.

At one point, when the mug seemed to look like a bowl, he was told by the master that he can eat udon in it already. Ohno-san then says "Hmm...Nino liked udon..."

Is he giving up already?

Nope! Just taking a break. Even the shokunin-san's wife lovingly gave him a pad (I think this is the cooling gel type for muscle relief) that she placed on Ohno's arm. It was a bit funny because part of it ended near the crease of Ohno's inner elbow which meant that it wouldn't keep attached. She seemed slightly annoyed that it happened but Ohno did reassure her it's fine and it felt good.

FINAL TOUCHES
Afterwards he continues hammering the bronze until he gets a cup-like shape. He uses a stencil to hammer in "Nino 32" at the bottom of the cup.

After that, he began to hammer all around it for texture. He did this tapping all over the mug. So tedious!

Then adds the handle, torches it. Before finally dipping (well the term use here was "swim") the cup in a liquid solution for final coloring.

After that Ohno finally smoothens it with sand paper. It was around this time I think he ended up fancing the mug a little too much. So much so that he said it's a waste to give this away. (Hahaha. Ohno-san, you can't take that. It already has "Nino 32" written on it!)

He started mumbling that if this wasn't used it'd be "Chotto na..." which is the indirect way of saying it'd be frustrating. (Japanese rarely say things negative and even when they want to it's still implied implicitly never explicitly said. Haha.)

FINAL PRODUCT — PRESENTING NINO'S GIFT
** pun not intended.

It looks very unique. I'm trying to find the right word for it (gosh, my vocabulary tonight keeps having its blank moments). Ohno tells them it's a bit lonely if it's just Nino who gets it so, the shokunin-san creates enough for all the members plus Miura Haruma!

USING THE MUG...
They each get their mugs filled with ice and tea and the first to give it a try is Nino. He says it's really cold--cold to the point that when you drink it when you don't feel as good it's something you can't take. (Or: "something that you shouldn't take." The negatives in his sentence allow either translation)

OVERALL I have to say, I love how this segment capitalizes on Ohno's artistic skill and without the other members around, he does have to speak up more. Loved the guest, loved the segment and I'm now wishing for one of those cups. :P
